Roparun: Paris to Rotterdam race against cancer
The Roparun is a relay run that spans 520 kilometers all the way from the French capital Paris to the main port of The Netherlands: Rotterdam. A sportive endeavour for teams, all about raising money for people that suffer from cancer. For that reason the event is named ‘Adventure for life’, citing the idea of “Adding life to days when days no longer can be added to life”.
Saturday June 11th, the twentiest edition of the Roparun started at Parc La Courneuve in Paris. Planned finish: Monday June 13th – Easter monday – between noon and 6.00 p.m. at the Coolsingel in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. At the closing party celebrating this anniversary, the organisation was able to announce that a staggering 4,9 million euros had been collected for the battle against cancer!
The Truston running team started as one of the first on that sunny Saterday afternoon in Paris. A clear advantage since all toilets ahead would still be clean and the team would have first choice of positions at the basecamps along the way.
After a cold night in France (3 degrees Celcius) the team enjoyed great weather and ditto views along the way. (Sofia support center in Troisville, Dendermonde, Zele, Ossendrecht) The runners were really motivated and moved with great speed over the French and Belgian hills. They even had to wait at some checkpoints because they were ahead of schedule!
As always the venom comes at the end; whatever the physiotherapists did, some of the runners just couldn’t make it. This meant the remaining six runners had to finish the last stretch from Bergen op Zoom all the way up to Rotterdam. Despite rain and the extra kilometers, they speeded towards the finish cheered by the many spectators. Around twelve thirty, the Truston team was welcomed by colleagues, friends and family.
